In November 2023, VIBM was assigned by the Department of Science and Technology of Hai Phong City to undertake a pilot project for "Improving the Technology for Processing Phospho Gypsum Waste from the DAP-Dinh Vu Fertilizer Plant for the Production of Cement Additives, Road Subgrade and Foundation Materials, and Construction Fill Materials." After a period of research and experimentation, on April 17, 2024, VIBM, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology of Hai Phong City and DAP-VINACHEM Joint Stock Company, held the seminar "Phospho Gypsum – The Green Material of the Future" at DAP-VINACHEM to present some results of the project.
Overview of the seminar "Phospho Gypsum – The Green Material of the Future".
The seminar was attended by: Mr. Nguyen Tien Tai – Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology for Economic and Technical Sectors, Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST); Mr. Hoang Huu Tan – Deputy Director of the Department of Building Materials, Ministry of Construction; Mr. Tran Quang Tuan – Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Hai Phong City; Mr. Nguyen Quang Hiep – President of VIBM; Mrs. Luu Thi Hong – Vice President of VIBM and project leader; Mr. Vu Van Bang – General Director of DAP-VINACHEM Joint Stock Company; Mr. Vu Tien Son – Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dinh Vu Green Joint Stock Company; Dr. Tran Ba Viet – Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Concrete Association and former Deputy Director of the Institute for Building Science and Technology; Representatives from the Standards Department, General Department of Standards, Metrology, and Quality, Ministry of Science and Technology; Hai Phong City People's Committee; Various departments, agencies, and government bodies of Hai Phong City, including the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Construction, Department of Planning and Investment, Standards and Quality Measurement Department, and Department of Information and Communications; Vietnam Cement Corporation (VICEM); Universities, research institutes, and cement manufacturing enterprises, as well as organizations involved in the production of phospho gypsum waste and the construction of fill materials and roadworks.
Dr. Nguyen Quang Hiep - President of VIBM delivered the opening remarks at the seminar.
In his opening speech at the seminar, Mr. Nguyen Quang Hiep - President of VIBM, stated that VIBM is a leading institution in Vietnam for researching the treatment and utilization of phospho gypsum waste for use in building materials, fill materials, and road foundations. VIBM is responsible for researching and developing TCVN 11833:2017 and the temporary technical guidelines on "Using Phospho Gypsum Waste as a Subgrade for Transport Infrastructure and as Fill Material for Construction Projects," as stipulated in Decision No. 1260/QD-BXD dated December 11, 2023, by the Ministry of Construction. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Chemical Group, in 2023 Vietnam produced approximately 1.4 million tons of phospho gypsum waste (PG), with around 11 million tons stored in landfills, while consumption was about 700,000 tons, mainly used as a cement additive. To enhance the use of phospho gypsum waste, additional standards are needed for its use as fill material and for road foundations. During the seminar, VIBM’s project team provided delegates with an overview of global and national regulations on the use of waste materials for road construction and fill material, and reported on the results of their pilot project. This includes two draft TCVNs: one for using phospho gypsum waste as fill material and another for using it as subgrade and road foundations. Additionally, the seminar offered information on the usage and consumption of phospho gypsum in cement production, the role of granular materials in fill and subgrade construction, and technologies for processing phospho gypsum waste through dry mixing and pelletizing.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Tai - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology for Economic and Technical Sectors, delivered a speech at the seminar.
In his speech at the seminar, Mr. Nguyen Tien Tai - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology for Economic and Technical Sectors at the Ministry of Science and Technology, commended VIBM's efforts in researching methods for processing and utilizing phospho gypsum waste for various purposes. The Ministry of Science and Technology will continue to support and collaborate to expedite the issuance of TCVNs for using phospho gypsum as fill material and for road construction, contributing to environmental protection and the conservation of natural resources.
Dr. Luu Thi Hong - Project Leader and Vice President of VIBM, delivered a speech at the seminar.
At the end of the seminar, Dr. Luu Thị Hong - the project leader, on behalf of the VIBM project team, thanked the delegates for their feedback. The team will incorporate the suggestions and revise the research content and the two draft TCVNs to ensure progress and quality for approval by the relevant management agencies.
