Study on Using Construction and Demolition wastes to produce oncrete and Mortar

In the recent years, Vietnam economy’s boom leads to a large change of its infrastructure system. Many buildings, especially old apartments in the big cities such as Hanoi or Hochiminh have being seriously downgraded and deteriorated need to be restored or renewed. Besides, many new projects being set up or planned to set up need to the clearance of the buildings in the project area. As a result of a large volume of Construction and Demolition wastes (C&D) is generating at present and in the comming time.

Reuse of  aggregate  recycled from C&D wastes in building and road construction has been applied in many countries and concluded satisfying technical requirements and gaining econimic efficiency and environmental protection.  Recycling of C&D wastes is currently an urgent problem when urban wastes are increasing day by day and becomes to overload for dumping grounds in the big cities.

Study on  reusing and recycling waste materials as raw materials and fuel in the manufacture of building materials is one part of a research del program of economical and efficient use  of  energy and natural resources in construction activities based on the No 377/QD-BXD decision of Ministry of construction.  Vietnam Institute for building materials (VIBM) undertaken a reseach given by Ministry of construction since 2007 is Study on Recyling   Construction and Demolition wastes for using in concrete and mortar

The main objectives of the study are as follows.
- Study and evaluate characteristics of aggregates recycled from C&D wastes as well as those of concretes and mortars using aggregates recycled from various sources of construction wastes
- Select the suitable technology for recyling C&D  wastes to be aggregate for concrete and mortar as well as the practice process of using recycled aggregate in concrete and mortar.
- Evaluate on the investment efficiency and the business in recyling C&D wastes from the experience of overseas countries and the application ablility in as well.

On  (
March, 7th  2008, the technical and scientific council of VIBM appoved the research draft. According to the evaluation of the council, the research works were seriously carried out, the data of the research are rich, clear Results of the research are  clearly shown up the current situations of treatment C&D wastes on the world and in Vietnam and the pilot program of using recycled aggregate in concrete and mortar.

The authors of the research accepted the contributive opinions of the council and further improved  the research results according to the council’s suggestion  to submit to the higher technical and scientific council for approval.
